Wednesday Wanderings: To Rome At Night
Roma is incredibly crowded and is a nightmare to navigate during the day. The bright sun tries to burn you to a crisp, 'townies' are fed up with tourists and try to run you over on their mopeds, and stampedes of fellow tourists will trample you to death if you don't watch where you're going.
So why not Rome at night?
... ah, the awkward sound of crickets.
Honestly, it cools down in the evening and the crowds retire for the night. My friends and I started off at Piazza di Trevi. There are helpful signs at every intersection, along with cameras. Be sure to smile and wave to big brother!
As long as you have a good buddy with you, you'll feel pretty safe and the city is yours to explore!

Honestly, it cools down in the evening and the crowds retire for the night. My friends and I started off at Piazza di Trevi. There are helpful signs at every intersection, along with cameras. Be sure to smile and wave to big brother!
We then made it to the famous Fontana di Trevi and reveled in its (relatively) uncrowded glory!
Something you absolutely should do is to toss coins into the fountain, but it must done in a specific manner. With your back to the fountain, hold a coin in your right hand and throw it over your left shoulder. Pro tip - the coin toss distance is easier from the side.
I made two attempts: one for love, and one for a return to Rome one day. The first coin didn't make it in the fountain, but I made the second. I'm not superstitious, but my interpretation is that while that first wish might not come true immediately, the second wish will - and I'll just find myself an Italian hottie then, eh? ;)
Another typically crowded landmark is the Pantheon (where people worship ALL THE GODS). At night, there aren't as many people because the interior is closed, but the rectangular vestibule is all yours to explore.
Step in and look up at the night sky and city lights through the giant granite corinthian columns!
("BUT WHAT'S INSIDE?!" you may ask. Worry not, I'll follow up with another post dedicated to the Pantheon in another Wednesday Wanderings post.)
Lastly, check out these chiseled abs (literally). These dudes can be found at the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the Piazza Navona. Fun fact, the Quattro Fiumi (four rivers) refer to Africa's Nile, Europe's Danube, Asia's Ganges, and America's Rio de la Plata. Remember to thank me when you win Trivia Crack one day.
After all that walking, I grabbed what was probably the 3rd gelato I had that day. It was well deserved.
As long as you have a good buddy with you, you'll feel pretty safe and the city is yours to explore!

Pssst... the one that looks like this! |
Thanks for stopping by, and Bon Voyage!
Gorgeous photos, Nahree! I visited Roma in college with a choir group and loved every moment of it. (All of Italy that I saw, actually, I loved.). Wish I'd had a good camera with me back then and more free time to wander at night. I look forward to the rest of your pics!
ReplyDeleteWe went to Rome a few years ago and really enjoyed it - you're totally right about the evenings being so much easier to enjoy! Your pictures are gorgeous :) We're hoping to go back to Italy in May. Probably not to Rome again but still, Italy! Let there be gelato!
ReplyDeleteOoooh~ Where in Italy will you be staying? I'm so envious of the good food, creamy gelati, and the beautiful scenery you will be enjoying this May!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I didn't know you sang! Do you still?
ReplyDeleteI lugged around my Nikon dslr and wished I stuck to iPhone pics, but looking at these photos now, I'm glad that I took the time to learn how to use one!
Looooove the pictures. So pretty! I haven't been back to Rome in yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaars (like 10 now, which is depressing for a bunch of reasons) and your pictures are really making me want to go back there
ReplyDeleteThanks Alley! This ongoing Wednesday Wanderings project is fun, but also tugs at my heartstrings - we need to go back!!
