Bossypants by Tina Fey

I FINALLY FINISHED IT!  My awesome friend (@CarlyJMA on twitter) gave me her copy to read LAST YEAR, so I basically owe her our school tuition's worth of interest if she were to charge me an overdue fee.

If you're reading this, thanks giiiiiiirl!

Tina Fey, can I love her any more than I already do?!  She shares her whip-smart wisdom through satirical humor and retells entertaining childhood stories in a way that make you cringe because you will relate so well to them.   I especially love her stories about her awkward relationship with her mother during puberty and her dad's badassery.

She holds off on the comedy when appropriate, when she reveals her struggles and stressful situations resulting from her juggle in being a leader, female in the entertainment business, role-model to writers, a mother and career-woman at the same time.  She keeps her chin up and justifies (as if you even have to, Tina!) her hard work ethic because as a leader, her sacrifice means success, and that means food, shelter, and security for each one of her employees.  This leadership and ownership of her calling is what I admire and aspire to emulate once I graduate and re-enter the workforce.

I love that she included actual script material from 30 Rock to give her co-workers a well-deserved shout-out by citing their "MVP" moments.  This book was a fun read, but she hid behind her humor like a well-crafted shield.  She touched briefly on politics when she discussed her Palin get-up, for example, but it was slightly annoying that she evaded divulging any of her own opinions with a poetic "just kidding" (I'm paraphrasing) every other sentence.  Other than that, it's been a great read!  I haven't read a book in a while that had me laughing out loud!

  2. Is it a tad dorky that I recalled every single episode from Tina Fey's references? Probably. But that's how great the show is, that we actually turn around and re-watch all these awesome MVP moments!

  4. I understand, it took me forever to get around to reading it, and I'm glad I did! It makes me appreciate 30 Rock even more, now that I know how much sacrifice went into its production.
