Villette in March: Week 4

This week's reading covers chapter 21-26.  Basically, that section in the book that's all about the letters.  Letter writing, letter reading, letter stealing, and letter hiding.

Lucy leaves the Brettons and maybe it's for the best, because Dr. John is a total mama's boy and there's no way Lucy's competing with that.  Anyway, he promises to write so Lucy stages a mental battle between her super intense Feels and the ever pragmatic Reason. I'm pretty sure she allows Reason to win, because she's depressed the next day and has locked away her other emotions in acceptance.  M. Paul screws up again by patronizing Lucy with the worst pep talk ever.

Chapter 22 kicks off the letter fiesta with Dr. John's letter to Lucy. She chooses to set the ambiance by reading it in a creepy attic. A creepy attic with a shadowy nun figure?  Absolutely terrifying. The dress that she wants to wear to the theater with Dr. John also ends up in the attic, so someone is obviously messing with her!  They finally go to the play, but then a fire happens and then boom:

Polly and her father were also at the theater and she ends up getting injured.  Dr. John is right there and conveniently treats her. To make the world seem even smaller, it turns out that Polly is Ginevra's cousin.  Funny how we all gave Dr. John/Graham such a hard time remembering Lucy, but the same thing's happened to Lucy regarding Polly.

After all these years, Polly turned out alright.  Polly > Ginevra, so Lucy's worried that she'll have her eyes set on Graham again.  It's a pretty legit concern, because Dr. John is being flirty-nice with her again.

Finally, the last part of the reading.  The letter stealing and letter hiding part. Someone *cough Madame cough* keeps going through her stuff, and all Lucy pretty much cares about are the letters, so she decides to hide them FOREVER.  We're talking a sealed bottle, under a tree, with slate and cement sprinkles on top.  Then ninja-nun appears again.  What is with the ninja-nun?!

The chapter ends with a juicy plan to RUIN Ginevra at a party (okay, probably not, but it's CB so it might get a tad dramatic) by proving that Dr. John is totally over her. It's all very '90's teen movie', so I can't wait to see what happens.
