Villette in March: Week 6
This week's reading covers Chapters 34-37. So, what happened?
- Lucy attempts to deliver a basket of fruit to Mme Walravens but even Red Riding Hood could have done a better job.
- According to Mme Beck, the best way to get to know a person better by setting up a convoluted scavenger hunt of sorts involving a basket of fruit, random errands, portraits on walls and clergymen telling love stories. This might sound absolutely crazy, but here's a suggestion: set up tea and have a normal conversation!
- M Paul is a good guy after all! Good-guy-Paul is rejected by gf's classist parents, separated from betrothed, mourns when gf (Justine Marie) dies from classic case of sadness, then takes care of gf's classist family when destitute.
- Lucy takes a French test. I can't even think in English when I'm stressed, so I felt for her when she intellectually face-planted in front of the examiners.
- Is Justine Marie the ghost-nun?!
- M Paul leaves what is essentially a "how to be Catholic" tract in Lucy's desk. Lucy is Protestant. Ha, subtle! (right...) Though they both believe in the same God, their friendship is "risky" because they're too different in their Christianity. I call BS. As a Christian myself, I'm annoyed by the close-mindedness some Christian denominations have about others. What happened to loving your neighbor? Absolutely ridiculous. I'm glad that M Paul eventually gets it and understands that Lucy's faith is just as legit as his.
- Polly and Dr. John/Graham. Eww. I still can't get over it.
Just a bit more to go - I don't want this to end guys! You've been such a fun group of readalong buddies! The gifs just won't be the same :(
